Winter in Wellington

Early morning trees, leaves and a seat on Lambton Quay.

One thing Wellington doesn’t do, most of the time, is snow. It is literally a once in thirty years type of event if we get snow in the city proper. This isn’t a big surprise really as the city is close to sea level and sufficiently low in lattitude that the weather gets cold and wet but rarely goes below freezing point.

This makes finding the classic winter wonderland type of shot a bit tricky. But it has it’s benefits. We often get fairly mild autumns that slide into winter. Thus these shots - these were all taken a week or two past the first official day of winter.

Autumn leaves brighten up Lambton Quay seating.

So while we can’t boast snowy vistas there still is beauty to be found even with the wet grey skies that are becoming common this time of year.

Pigeons searching amongst the leaves.

The pigeons check through the leaves in the hope that someone has left them food. Given the collection of food vendors near here, their chances are pretty good.

Circular water feature reflects some of the city.

This is one of the things I like about photography and why I find it an invaluable hobby. Looking for these sorts of images forces me to pay attention to the world around and be a little more present in the moment.
